CYBERSECURITY IN CAMBODIA: AWARENESS AS A FIRST STEP
Digitalization is an important factor contributing to the overall recent growth of ASEAN and its members, Cambodia included. Although ASEAN is behind its global peers in terms of contribution to the internet economy, the region has the potential to become one of the top five digital economies in 2025, with almost twelve million people being currently employed within the growing Information Communication Technology (ICT) industry sector. The ASEAN ICT sector, along with Cambodian one, has experienced recent fast growth, bringing to the surface some issues, and one of the most concerning ones is represented by cyber threats. The number of cyberattacks in the region is on the rise, and currently, Cambodia, along with other ASEAN member states, has agreed to only abide by a limited general and non-binding list of principles. Cambodia is currently vulnerable to cyberattacks due to an absence of a framework to follow, both at the regional and the national level.
