From 2017 to 2020, the relationship between the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) deteriorated significantly. President Donald J. Trump began raising tariffs and other trade barriers to export Chinese-made products the United States in March 2018 (Council on Foreign Relations n.d.). This decision was justified due to the growing bilateral trade deficit, alleged intellectual property theft and forced transfer of US-made technologies by Chinese firms and the PRC.
